1 billion served

Facebook, or was that McDonalds?

Facebook recently reported that the passed 1 billion users. I’m sure the number’s not exactly accurate, but at that number, it’s kind of a moot point.

Makes me think about all the data. All those people talking about what they’re doing, where they’re going, checking in. Its unpredented, really. All of us putting information in the public sphere that we’d otherwise not share.  Such an interesting phenomenon to me, that people will post things on Facebook that they certainly wouldn’t say in a room full of people.

And what could be done with all that information? Projects are already well-advanced at using social media to track illnesses and use it in emergency situations. Wonder what else it could be used for, what else it could tell us about people?  I’m thinking that with certain people, it could even be used in a predictive fashion based on compilations of their behavior.

Worried about China? Might start thinking about Facebook, or Google.
